As a trainee in O&G, I can recall being involved with only a very small number of peripartum hysterectomies. In fact, each one was so memorable that I can still remember the exact circumstances of the case, although over a quarter of a century has passed by. Today's trainees must have become almost desensitised to this most major example of serious maternal morbidity, as it is becoming more common, and much of the increase is to do with the twin problems of placenta praevia and accreta, Undoubtedly, the predisposing factor of greatest significance is previous caesarean section.
