THIS year, Plant Names returns as a short monthly column introducing and discussing recent name changes to garden plants. A good place to start the new series is with the two books of rules that govern the use and formation of new names and the way they are written. The Latin names of plants are governed by the Rules and Recommendations of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, sometimes known as the Botanical Code, while the names of plants selected or bred by humans, mostly cultivar names in English, are governed by the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, better known as the Cultivated Plant Code (CPC).
