Freight forwarding company Skelton Sherborne director Brad Skelton said in some situations it was cheaper to ship heavy loads of cargo via sea freight. "All these escort vehicles and police charge so many dollars a kilometre and to ship the machines around the coast is frequently cheaper," Skelton said. "It varies from machine to machine, depending on the dimensions and weight." The downside is the transit time, which usually takes a few days longer than trucking.
