Concerned landholders who thought trees were the answer to Australia's salinity problems should think again. A long-term study by the Department of Agriculture and Food in Western Australia has found integrated farm forestry has delivered little salinity benefits. This finding was presented to the International Salinity Forum in Adelaide recently by department researcher Dr Richard George. "For many years, planting trees was the most common practice used to try and overcome salinity," Dr George said.
