The International Harvester Company was created on August 12 1902, as the result of a merger of several enterprises, the largest of which were the McCormick Harvester Co and The Deering Company. Now, over a century later, the name of International continues to be symbolic around the world of a wide range of innovative tractors and farm machinery. During the early years of farm tractor development, the tractor was conceived as being a self propelled vehicle which could largely replace the draught horse. The size and power of the engine directly related to the number of horses which were replaced.
