Social networking sites have 'exploded' across the web in recent years, and many companies are using this new communication channel to promote their brands and products. But while the opportunities are many, so are the pitfalls. Peta Neilson found outmore. Social media provides an easy and inexpensive way to reach millions of potential clients. Sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter can reach a wider audience and spread an advertising message more rapidly than conventional communication platforms such as television or radio. Unlike traditional advertising, which talks at the consumer, social media opens a dialogue between companies and consumers, who not only get a loud voice, but also hundreds of channels to make it heard.
