In a recent conversation with Tuula Ojala of the Swedish Cement and Concrete Research Institute, your Editor had an opportunity discuss water repellent treated concrete. Tuula kindly forwarded this thesis outline from Anders Johansson that captures the latest developments in an exciting field. Johansson writes: Water repellent agents, today mainly consisting of alkylalkoxysilanes, are often used on concrete to prolong the service life of the structure. This is accomplished by protecting the reinforcement bars from chlorides or by changing the moisture content inside.
