It is the ultimate in recycling - Australian food manufacturers will soon be able to turn their rubbish into safe, value-added products for use in medicines and health supplements because of breakthrough technology developed by University of WesternSydney (UWS) and Food Science Australia scientists. Based on their work with whey by-products from dairy processing, the team has invented methods to separate and purify the nutrients contained in manufacturing waste. The development has excited scientists both in Australia and overseas and has been honoured with the Environmental Science Technology Sector Award for Excellence at the recent Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia Awards.
