Effect of some weed control methods on weeds, yield and fruit quality of peach orchard

A study was carried out in 1997-98 on peach trees in Feisha, Egypt, to evaluate the effect of traditional methods and herbicides on weed control, tree productivity and fruit quality. All herbicidal treatments (glufosinate at 1 or 2 litres/feddan, fluazifop-P at 1 or 2 litres/feddan and glufosinate + fluazifop-P at 1 litre/feddan), used alone or combined with urea and mechanical hoeing, and hand hoeing significantly decreased the total fresh weight of weeds, in comparison to the unweeded treatment (1706.6 and 2635.0 g/m2 in 1997 and 1998, respectively). Glufosinate + fluazifop-P was significantly the most effective treatment, reducing the weeds fresh weight to 460.0 and 710.0 g/m2 in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Both herbicides treatments and the hand hoeing treatment increased the fruit weight and yield from 53.15-58.75 g and 21.04-24.08 kg in the unweeded control, respectively. Glufosinate + fluazifop-P resulted in the best of physical and chemical characteristics of the fruits and increased theyield to 35.00 and 42.73 kg in 1997 and 1998, respectively. [1 feddan=0.42 ha.]
