Seed viability of mung bean in relation to seed-borne fungi and artificial fungal infestation

Forty mung bean seed samples drown from Giza 1 and Kawmy 1 cultivars were screened for the incidence of fungi using seed-plate technique and glucose-Czapek's agar medium. Seeds were inoculated with the four most prevalent fungi singly or in combination for 12 weeks at 28 deg C to test their effects on seed vitality. Twenty one fungal species + 1 vitality belonging to ten genera and 30 species + 1 variety belonging to 12 genera were isolated from seeds of Giza 1 and Kawmy 1 cultivars, respectively.Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Asp. niger and Rhizopus stolonifer were found to be the most prevalent species. The vitality of seeds inoculated with fungi were significantly inhibited compared with uninoculated ones. Kawmy 1 viability parameters decreased more than Giza 1 due to the treatments. The highest viability loss of seeds was reported in seeds inoculated with Alt. alternata with 86.0 percent germination compared to 96.50 for the control after 3 weeks. Abnormalities of seedling increased up to 14.75 percent for the same fungi at 6 weeks.
