Measurement of arterial blood pressure (AP) is an important function of modern monitoring systems. The systolic (P_(SYS)), diastolic (P_(DIA)), and mean (P_(MEAN)) AP values should always be monitored during anesthesia, resuscitation, and intensive therapy (so-called minimal monitoring).Measurement of AP can be invasive (IBP) or nonin-vasive (NIBP). Invasive measurement is performed using a catheter with pressure sensor introduced into an artery. Noninvasive measurement is especially often implemented using an occlusion cuff. The advantage of IBP is the higher accuracy of measurement. However, because of its invasivity it is usually used only in surgery. The results of NIBP are usually sufficient to monitor the pressure dynamics and detect the pressure going beyond the alarm threshold. NIBP can be used for long-term pressure monitoring under various conditions.
