摘要

If you have any connection to the forest industry, you have probably received an email message with a note at the bottom that says something to the effect of, "It's okay to print this. Paper is a biodegradable, renewable, sustainable product made fromtrees. Growing and harvesting trees provides thousands of jobs ..." etc.I get it. There's no real shortage of wood, and no one should assume that manufacturing forest products is bad for forests. On the other hand, even if I know for certain that a product is made in accordance with sustainable practices, I don't think thatmeans we should consume the product with reckless abandon. Maybe it's the result of a Calvinist streak in my upbringing, but I object strenuously to wasting stuff - be it leftovers from last night's supper, or wood fiber.
