As I write this article the final renovations are being done at the Maritime Beef Test Station in preparation for the GrowSafe feed intake measuring system to be installed. It should be working as you read this. It really is a game changer in terms ofwhat we can measure and select for at the Beef Test Station. First off, we should be able to pick up on any sickness in the bulls faster, as the computer system that runs the feeders is already programmed to look for a drop in feed intake or an extendedperiod of time between feedings, and will alert the staff to which bulls may be a concern. The expectation is that this system can pick up s ickness days earlier than experienced feedlot workers can, based on work in western Canada and the U.S. Fewer sick days means better response to treatment and healthier bulls.
