The light at the end of the tunnel for Atlantic Beef Products Inc. is looking more and more like an oncoming train. Last year was billed by plant management, the provincial government, and producers as a chance to become profitable. A revolving door in the president's office was stabilized after Mike Nabuurs moved from his previous post as executive director of the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture to take the job. A new hamburger line was operational and new markets were found in regional and centralCanada. The plant, which has lost money since it opened in2004, appeared to be pointed in the direction of black ink. At one point in 2006, the plant was experiencing losses of close to $500,000 a month. The provincial government, which has been covering the losses for the facility since it opened, had budgeted for losses of $1.5 milhon, with the hope the operation could come close to breaking even in 2012.
