Early mornings, 4-H youth, and cattle made an interesting combination at the EastGen Atlantic Beef Showcase held July 10 to 12 at the Truro Agridome in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. The event focused on preparation of beef and dairy cattle for show, livestock judging, showmanship, clipping, display design, and herd management. On the Friday afternoon and evening, 4-Hers aged 13 to 21 attended educational sessions at the nearby agricultural campus of Dalhousie University. These included a seminar on the estrus cycle of cows by Dr. Tim Henshaw of EastGen, which is the farmer-owned company that organizes the annual event. Based in Guelph, Ontario, EastGen is one of three regional co-ops that jointly own Semex, a developer and marketer of beef and dairy genetics.
