ONCE thought of as a luxury, an athletic trainer (AT) is increasingly recognized as a minimum component of the provision of athletics in the secondary school setting. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) encourages all secondary schools to have a properly credentialed AT engaged with their athletic programs. The number of ATs providing services to secondary school athletic programs has grown considerably over the last 25 years. According to the NATA, more members work in secondary school and clinic/secondary school settings (25%) than any other practice setting.
