Assessment and management of leg abnormalities in 1077 young thoroughbred foals born over five years

One thousand and seventy seven foals born over five years in the main foaling unit on a large commercial thoroughbred stud in the Hunter Valley were examined as newborns and at weekly intervals by the resident stud veterinarian, foaling unit manager and farrier. Abnormalities in knees, fetlocks and hocks were described and recorded. Management, including non-surgical and surgical options were instituted in the first five weeks post foaling.
