The Interovulatory Period Associated With Deslorelin (Ovuplant ~(TM)) Use In The Mare

Early pregnancy diagnosis and reduction of the time between breedings is important to improve the efficiency of stud management. The use of ovulating agents and intense monitoring of mares is important to improve efficiency with insemination using frozen semen. Deslorelin showed no evidence of refractoriness with repeated use, although recent work suggests there might be an increase in interovuiatory period with repeated use of deslorelin. The suggested method of administration is injecting the implant beneath the mucous membrane of the vulva after local anaesthetic injection, so that it can be easily located to excise 48 hours later. This method increases the skill level needed to administer the drug and might be difficult for a client to administer. This prompted a review of our breeding records to expand information about the use of deslorelin and the interovuiatory period. Uterine inflammation can depress fertility and inflammation reduces over time. A review of pregnancy rate with respect to interovuiatory period was considered to see if an increase in the interovuiatory period lead to an increase in the pregnancy rate.
