In the author's opinion the management of a band of broodmares is production medicine very similar to the management of a herd of dairy or beef cattle. I would be the first to agree that some individuals are more important than others but in general the herds performance is more important than individuals. When manage a herd of mares goals need to be set for the performance of the herd. There will of course be individual exceptions, but in general, the mares should be handled as a group to encouragemaximum reproductive performance. When mares are encouraged to perform as a group there is a very good chance that they will all perform better than they will if left to there own devises. So how do we achieve increased performance in a band of broodmares?
