In August of this year, NewPage announced the indefinite closure of its Port Hawkesbury paper mill. Despite the quality of the mill's product and the dedication of its workforce, the problems facing NewPage had become overwhelming: Depressed world market for quality paper, the strong Canadian dollar, high transportation costs, and the rising cost of electricity. Theprovincialgovernmentreactedwith a seven point "action plan" intended to keep some of the forest workers employed, while Nova Scotia Power is scrambling to find a way to meet the mill's electricity needs less expensively.
