Serum total cholesterol and mortality in middle-aged Korean women.

Cholesterol level of a population tends to be influenced by genetic factors as well as saturated fat intake or other lifestyle factors , Recent changes in dietary patterns and increasing cholesterol level of Asian population raise a concern about increasing burden of cholesterol related diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD) in the population - However, only a few studies examined the association between cholesterol and mortality in Asian population with conflicting findings regarding the probably higher risk at low cholesterol level [4-6]. Furthermore, little is known in Asian women about the impact of age and menopause on the choles-terol/CHD association, an important issue given that women tended to experience delayed onset of CHD compared with men and a postmenopausal increase in the cholesterol level and CHD incidence .
