摘要

Petroleum fuel reserve is decreasing rapidly and it is a non-renewable fuel. The stringent emission norms and increased hydrocarbon fuel cost lead to the search of alternative fuels for IC engines. Ethanol is used as an alternative fuel because it is renewable and environment-friendly. Ethanol is injected electronically into the inlet manifold and diesel is injected directly inside the cylinder. The flow of air and ethanol through the inlet manifold and mixing of diesel fuel with air inside the cylinder influences combustion performance and emission level. Velocity and pressure contours along the length of inlet manifold were predicted by CFD code. The maximum velocity of flow was found to be at the port passage where restriction to flow is maximum. The pressure during the flow of air and ethanol in the manifold was found to be nearly the same for a particular inlet valve opening position. The path lines of particles of flow in the manifold were complex and turbulent. Recirculation zones were present in the manifold.
