Screening methods (SC) for the detection of physiological resistance to white mold [WM, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary] in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and related Phaseolus species have varied considerably over the pastseveral decades. Availability of an effective, easy, reliable, repeatable, and economical screening method with resolving power that permits identification of large and small physiological resistance to WM will facilitate breeding, genetics, and pathology studies. Such SC also will facilitate formulation of effective complementary management practices to combat WM in the field and germplasm screening, enhancement, and cultivar development. Our objective was to briefly review some of the SC used in the past and report on the effectiveness of the most recent SC used in the greenhouse at the University of Idaho, Kimberly Research and Extension Center.
