Paragon s Managing Director Moshiur Rahman said the bird flu and the ailing economy severely affected chick and feed sales in Bangladesh. Over 50% of the small farmers suffered severe losses and were forced to cease operations following the bird flu outbreaks in 2007 and 2008. As a result, Paragon also experienced a dip in its DOC and feed sales. Its production of broiler DOC dropped by 50% to 400,000 DOC/week in 2008 and layer chicks dropped by 35% to 20,000 DOC/week in the year. Despite this setback, Mr Rahman saw opportunities in egg retailing and chicken processing.
