Asian benzene prices are expected to stay firm in Ql 2005 on the back of increased demand from new styrene and phenol units that will be coming onstream soon.Although Asian spot prices had dipped after the February US contract price was settled at USS3.12/gal(see page 25),sellers remained optimistic that healthy demand from China would keep prices in the USUS850-890/tonne fob Korea range.Producers were also unfazed by the closure of the East-West arbitrage window as new derivative units were expected to absorb surplus volumes.
