Some observations about shangshi or suiseki as an art form according to eastern and western understanding

1. shangshi or suiseki is based on pure nature and has nothing to do with artificiality; 2. shangshi or suiseki has a philosophical aspect. In the western world, there has always been conflict between nature and art. Art is regarded as something artificial in contrast to nature. This view probably never existed in China and Japan. Human beings are considered part of nature - they are equal to the elements of nature.
