Marine biologists will all have heard of – and routinely used – breffits: large, wide-mouthed jars for holding specimens (Figure 1). Generally made of plastic today, and usually screw-capped, they are traditionally carried into the field in stout rectangular wicker baskets, with a central bow handle, which can accommodate two jars. "Breffit" is not in the Oxford English dictionary, and individuals unfamiliar with the term and unaware of its origin, often misspell it (for example, "brevit", "brefit").
