Electronic health records and improved care

Danny McCormick and coauthors' article (Mar 2012) raised concern about whether using electronic health records (EHRs) will actually save money. Shortly after, the Archives of Internal Medicine published a study that found doctors did order fewer lab tests when they had access to a patient's EHRs. Although these studies came to different conclusions, both made important contributions to the discussion of EHRs, not the least of which was penetrating the mainstream media and bringing this topic to the attention of the public.
