A 600km electricity interconnection between Mejillones in Chile’s northern SING transmission grid and Cardones in the central SIC grid will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017. The project is on target despite delays implementing a related 500kV project from Cardones to Polpaico in the SIC region, according to French energy company Engie’s local subsidiary E-CL. The $860mn double-circuit, 500kV alternating-current line connecting the SING and the SIC will allow excess thermal generation from the north to be transferred to central Chile when hydroelectric supplies in the SIC are limited. Excess power from central Chile could supply the north when hydro generation is strong.
