Rins retreat on ‘reasonable’ relief

The US market in renewable identifica- tion numbers (Rins) is taking stock of hints by environmental regulator the EPA of relief in 2014 biofuels blending obliga- tions. The EPA says it will ensure biofuel blending requirements for motor fuel refiners, importers and other suppliers next year are “reasonably attainable” in light of existing US fuel infrastructure and demand (AGM, 9 August, p5). The move cut demand for Rins and returned prices to March levels (see graph). Importers and refiners can buy Rins to meet targets, instead of directly blending biofuel into their motor fuels.
