THE demand for steel in the GCC region is expected to rise by 7-8 percent this year, beating even the 5-6 percent projected for the rest of the globe, said project manager for Arce-lorMittal Distribution, Johan Schepens, yesterday. According to figures provided by Schepens, in 2006, Saudi Arabia as the biggest buyer of steel, with 5.8 MT, followed by the UAE with 4.7MT7 year. The number for the rest of the GCC states was 2.1 MT/ year. Steel worth 1.8 billion dollars was purchased by buyers in the "greater GCC region", including Egypt, in the year.
