Attempts to increase the ethanol content of gasoline at the retail level in northern Europe are meeting with varying success. German drivers remain suspicious of E10 gasoline — a blend with 10pc ethanol — and have largely avoided switching from E5 blends. E10 demand has risen to just 15pc of the market in the three years since Germany launched it as the main type of gasoline, despite it selling at discounts of up to ?0.10/l ($22/bl) to E5.
