Canada publishes five-year pesticide review workplan

The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has published its re-evaluation and special review workplan until March 31st 2027. The plan contains the proposed and final pesticide review decisions published since April this year, besides all open re-evaluations and special reviews, as well as new reevaluations expected to be initiated within the five-year period. The regulator rates its workload involving post-market review programmes for pesticide active ingredients as “significant”, adding that resources allocated for the purpose are falling short of the mounting load. To address the situation, the PMRA is looking to develop “new and modern approaches” for pesticide evaluations under a “transformation agenda”, noting that it will undertake a “continuous oversight and a proportional risk-based approach”, as opposed to the current “point-in-time” model. It anticipates the exercise translating into enhanced efficiency, transparency and timely decisions, observing that the activity will entail increased use of “real world data” associated with pesticide use and water monitoring, besides independent scientific advice.
