Qatargas and RasGas Want to Acquire 57 Methane Tankers

Qatargas and RasGas,Qatar's two liquefied natural gas (LNG) production companies,are looking for a shipbuilding company or a consortium of shipyards with which to conclude exclusive contracts for the construction of 57 methane tankers."We want to send a clear message to the market that we are keen on making long-term alliances with yards," explained the Manager for Commercial Shipping at Qatargas,Mr.Ali al-Hammadi,quoted by the weekly magazine Trade Winds.The order would consist of 33 large-capacity methane tankers for transporting LNG to the United States,another 16 large tankers for exports to the United Kingdom,and eight ships of a more conventional size for transporting LNG cargoes from train 5 of the RasGas liquefaction plant.The fourth and fifth trains of its plant will each have a capacity of 4.7 million tons/year and will supply LNG both to the Indian company Petronet and to Europe.
