Possible Downturn in Production at Mexico's Cantarell Field Rekindles the Debate Surrounding Peak Oil

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal on 9 February,an internal study produced by Petroleos Mexicanos(Pemex)suggests that production at the Cantarell field,the largest oilfield in Mexico,could fall substantially in the coming years because of a faster-than-expected increase in water and gas levels.The issue is critical for Mexico,since Cantarell,which is one of the largest oilfields in the world,currently accounts for 2 million b/d of the country's total output of 3.3-3.4 million b/d.
