Electricity - leisure Going into spring and summer, the HSE has urged pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues to make sure that the electrical installations and electrical equipment that they use in outdoor spaces are safe. The HSE is working with the hospitality industry and local authority enforcement officers to increase awareness and to improve safety standards. Venues should arrange for a competent person to carry out electrical installation work, and should use only lights and heaters designed for outdoors. They should also regularly check equipment for damage or water ingress, while fixed installation and electrical appliances should be inspected, tested and maintained in line with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. John Rowe, the HSE's head of operational strategy, said that "It is important to make sure electrical equipment is in good condition, particularly as it may have been unused and in storage for a long period of time."
