Second-highest month ever at 77.8 million metric tons

World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute set a record for the month of April and was the second-highest month ever at 77.8 million metric tons. Global production increased by 8.2 percent as compared to April last year. and by 8.7 percent year- to-date (YTD). Output in China surged 19.4 percent or 10.7 million metric tons during the first four months of 2003. Crude steel production in North America amounted to 10.3 million metric tons in April, increasing by 2.3 percent as compared to the same period last year and by 6.1 percent year-to-date, but falling 654,000 tons since March. U.S. output fell 0.1 percent compared to April 2002, but increased by 4.6 percent since the beginning of this year.
