The Association of Steel Producers has called on the government to reconsider its decision on levying a three-percent surcharge on steel sales given the decline in international prices. According to the Persian dally Etemad, members of the association's board of directors told reporters that the industry is seeking tax exemption. "Steel industry creates 27 jobs indirectly for each direct job it generates and Is the top foreign currency earner after oil and petrochemical industries," said Mohammad Taqi Rahma-ni, who heads the Association of Steel Producers, adding that some 707 million dollars worth of steel was exported last year. He further noted that steel exports are on the rise, stressing that the industry earned the country some 255 million dollars during March-May period.
