Algeria's natural gas demand has been growing rapidly over the past 10 years, having increased at an annual rate of 4% between 1998 and 2008, taking it up from 18.2 billion cubic meters in 1998 to 26.6 billion cubic meters in 2008. According to the Electricity and Gas Regulation Commission (CREG), the country's demand will rise by 6.6% to 28.36 billion cubic meters in 2009. Moreover, over the 10 years from now to 2018 the growth rate will accelerate to 7.4% a year, according to the baseline scenario of the CREG. If that scenario proves accurate, Algerian gas consumption will reach 54.22 billion cubic meters in 2018, representing an increase of around 104% relative to 2008.
