AOGM:Iraq has considerable hydrocarbon potential,especially in crude oil,but what is the potential of Kurdistan in terms of reserves?Iain Brown:This region presently accounts for 3% to 4% of Iraq's total oil reserves.On the basis of official data and taking account only of fields that are unequivocally located within Kurdistan,such as Tawke and Taq Taq for example,the estimate is about 1.2 billion barrels.Other fields which lie on or close to the boundaries of Kurdistan may be subject to further negotiation over jurisdiction.One also has to consider the prospects for appraising existing discoveries,the future exploration potential and the confidence of operators working in this region.I would expect the current figures to be revised significantly upwards as appraisal and exploration activities progress.
