The Amendments to the 2005 Law Have Not Fundamentally Altered the Attractiveness of Our Projects,Chakib Khelil, the Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, tells AOGM
The key words for 2007 are training, research and development and preparing for the next generation of managers. Moreover, the ministry is undergoing a reorganization, since the agencies that have been created over the past few years have taken over, and are going to take over, some of the functions of our ministry. We are going to concentrate on the political and strategic aspects of our sector [Editor's note:hydrocarbons, power, new and renewable energies, and mining],put the emphasis on monitoring and supervision activities, and continue our international relations work, especially sa regards our links with OPEC and other organizations. On the other hand,we have a new function, which is nuclear energy, and we are creating a new directorate to that end.Algeria has signed the non-proliferation treaty, and we intend to sign the additional protocol to that treaty. We possess uranium reserves,we have two nuclear research centers, each equipped with a reactor, and we have a specialized institute, hence the natural and human resources for this sector of activity. We are committed to a long-term electronuclear power project.
