Petroleum products are very sensitive goods politically and socially, especially in developing countries. When there is an insufficient supply and their prices are deemed too high, it often triggers reactions of great hostility, and such problems acquire even greater magnitude in oil producing and exporting countries, since public opinion obviously finds it much harder to understand and admit that there can be shortages and price increases.
