UK energy minister: CCS essential for future coal power

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology will be essential to ensure the future of coal in the UK's generation mix, said Mike O'Brien, minister of state for energy and climate change. “CCS is the most certain way to secure the future of the coal industry,” O'Brien said, speaking yesterday at the Mc- Closkey UK coal conference. But the minister would not say when the UK government's CCS competition is likely to be awarded. The competition was first introduced as far back as March 2007, with a shortlist of nominees issued last summer.
