HSBC tops banks in climate efforts

Major banks and financial institutions have made some progress in mitigating their exposure to climate change risk, but a new report by the Ceres investor coalition suggests the banking sector must do more across all sectors of its portfolios. The report ranked 16 US, 15 European, five Asian, three Canadian and one Brazilian bank using a 1- to 100-point scoring system, and found that diversified banks scored highest, having more opportunities and different sectors in which to address climate change, said Douglas Cogan, report author and director of climate change research at the RiskMetrics Group.
