LSFO rule is an accident waiting to happen

It is not next year's reduction in the global sulphur emissions limit outside the emissions control areas (ECAs) to 3.5 that is attracting attention but the further reduction to 0.1 in ECAs three years down the line. The EU's introduction in January 2010 of a mandatory 0.1 limit on fuels used in port was marked by a succession of incidents, but in general the industry has learned to live with the ruling. However, the impending extension of a similar limit in 2015 to all ships sailing in the Baltic and North Sea ECAs has caused a leading industry body to question the wisdom of actually applying that limit.
