Hurdles still to clear

Other than on board LNG carriers, where there is a boundless supply of fuel, and along the Norwegian coast, where a supply infrastructure is already in place, the biggest hurdles in the way of LNG becoming an acceptable alternative fuel is the need to create a bunkering infrastructure and a means of storing fuel on board. The EU has attempted to promote LNG in northern European waters through projects such as MA-GALOG and Cleanship, but in the final analysis it will be commercial pressure, perhaps reinforced by Draconian emission regulations, that will determine whether or not LNG achieves widespread acceptance as a fuel for ships.
