The South Korean government has “no plans” to introduce a cap on biomass co-firing levels, according to the trade, industry and energy ministry (Motie). The government had been considering a cap on biomass to keep a balance between all types of renewable energy, noting that this would encourage “obligors” to fulfil their renewable portfolio standard (RPS) duties through these other types. The government decided not to introduce the cap last year, following a review. But it had been unclear whether the cap would ultimately come into force, leaving market participants uncertain of the likely pace of biomass growth and future levels of consumption. The cap would have significantly stifled growth in the market, traders said.
