A group of leading academics have urged universities around the world to join the campaign to divest their endowments from fossil fuel companies. The group Academics Stand Against Poverty (ASAP), an association of university researchers that campaigns to promote global development, has urged universities to follow the lead of institutions such as Stanford University and the University of Glasgow that have committed to completely divest from fossil fuels. The top ten wealthiest universities in the US alone have around $161bn of combined investments, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
