The first half-year of life is critical in children who are undergoing single-ventricle palliation. Balancing pulmonary and systemic circulation is extremely difficult because of its unique physiology, namely, "in-parallel circulation." Adjusting the amount of the pulmonary blood flow is challenging in patients undergoing the Norwood operation and systemic-to-pulmonary shunt, especially in neonates and in patients with low body weight.
