Prevalence of Suicide Among Patients With Sudden Death-Predisposing Genetic Heart Diseases

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young person is a rare but traumatizing event that not only affects the family but also marks the community for a long time. Patients with various SCD-predisposing genetic heart diseases (GHDs), particularly the inherited cardiomyopathies and channelopathies, have a higher prevalence of anxiety and depression in addition to a maladaptive response to stressful life events (2). Whether this translates into increased rates of suicide has yet to be examined. At the Mayo Clinic’s Windland Smith Rice Genetic Heart Rhythm Clinic, we retrospectively identified 1,655 patients (912 females (55%); median age at diagnosis: 15.4 years [interquartile range: 7.7 to 34.6 years]) with confirmed diagnosis of long QT syndrome (n = 1,284; 78%), catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (n = 147; 9%), Brugada syndrome (n = 53; 3%), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (n = 119; 7%), or arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (n = 52; 3%) from 1998 to 2019.
